How to build your first Bot in LAIYE?

Install UiBot Creator – After the download is complete, double-click the downloaded installation package and click the Start Installation button to install UiBot Creator.
Once you are done with the installation and logged in using your credentials, You will see a screen like below. Click on “New” to get started.

Pop-up Messages will be displayed asking are going to create a process or Library?

A process block can have many commands, or just have one command. When all business processes are put in one process block, if the business process is not complicated, it works out. However, when the business process is more complicated, there can be many disadvantages: large chunks of code, unclear logic, inconvenient debugging, and difficulties in judging emerging problems.

Home Screen looks pretty simple yet powerful, it has only 5 shapes to start with however you can create as complex a flow as you wish. (Block is the main part which contains a series of commands and everything inside.)

BP Skills are nothing but packaged WEB API that allows quick consumption of Web services exposed by many other industry leaders and partners.
These skills can be submitted to Blue Prism Digital Exchange from where you can download and distribute your Web API.

On the other side; Increasing no of assets/skills on DX gives clear indication towards how capabilities of AWS, Google, Microsoft can be utilized using skills or WEB API.

Web API offers flexibility to call a variety of 3rd party services, including cognitive AI capabilities from Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

The Blue Prism Web API configuration tool has been designed in such a way that it provides flexibility to configure your API inflexible way providing full control on how you want to use that.

In general – it has provided flexibility to configure headers, post-data (payload information), authentication and allow parameters to be defined that can be used to pass data into a request.

How to configure web API in Blue Prism?

In this example, I will showcase -Use of Currency Exchange API (Vendor API) Configuration into Blue Prism Web API section …

By using this API, you can get Live currency and foreign exchange rates by specifying the source and destination quotes and optionally amount to calculate. Support a vast amount of quotes around the world.

Let’s create a Currency Exchange Web API definition…

Web API definitions are configured in the System Settings of the Blue Prism Interactive Client for product version 6.4 Above in case you don’t see this option you need to check out your administrator about BP upgrade plan.

Here is how you can navigate to the Web API configuration page.

Go to Blue Prism System tab.
Select Web API Services from the navigation tree.
Click Add Service from the options menu.

The New Web API Service dialogue displays.

Heads up! for example, we have used simple API which contains only 1 GET method to get Live currency and foreign exchange rates by specifying the source and destination quotes and optionally amount to calculate.

So configuring this API, we have used few basic settings, a common header that needs to be passed with each API call, parameters like source and target currency along with the amount which needs to be converted and finally build the request URL which will return the response

Step 1- Basic Configuration

Provide a unique name to base URL so that you can identify the same in Blue Prism Object Studio
Provide the base URL which will be common for all the methods of API

for example, if we have API endpoint like https://community-open-weather-map.p.rapidapi.com/v1/forecast/daily we should configure https://community-open-weather-map.p.rapidapi.com as base URL and other parts can be used in Actions Request so that with different methods of API you can use different URL or versioning.

Step 2- Common Headers

Configuration for common headers is configured at API definition level which can be used across all the methods of API. In case you need to specify the headers required or specific to particular method don’t add that in common header section instead, you can define them in the Actions section.

Step 3 – Define action & configure parameters

Once you are done with common settings, you can configure the required action. In this web API, we have to the GET method to get the exchange rate between currency pair.

So we have defined 3 parameters specific to this action –

from – source currency
to – target currency
q – amount needs to be converted (optional)

Make sure to tick expose checkbox so that they are available via Object Studio.

Now, you need to configure the request URL …

this usually requires concatenation of parameters defined in previous steps or any other with the URL path so that valid request can be sent from BP.

You should double-check the URL path as most of the time you API will not run due to bad formation of request.

How to use configured API into your Blue Prism process/objects

Once you are done with the above steps you should be able to see that listed in WEB API Configuration Page. You can check that by navigating the System Tab –

So far so good … and we are done with service configuration part … now let’s move to the next step to consume this web API into object or process This is very similar in the way we use VBO objects or other objects. Your exposed Web API will be listed as business objects and same can be included into object/process using action.

Let’s create a quick object with one action page to consume web API Business Object (Currency Exchange API) and Action (Get exchange).

You can see that the output has a couple of other Data Items such as HTTP Status Code, Response Header, Request Data and intended output (Response Content). Building exception handling and other decision based on these data items are fairly quick and easy, you can easily create more complex business objects based on your requirement & use case.

The key points you need to know and keep in mind

Web API definitions contain all the data required to instruct Blue Prism how to make HTTP requests to a Web API. The data in the API definition determines how each request is constructed, specifying the required URL, HTTP method, headers, and authentication, required to make a request. API definitions also allow parameters to be defined that can be used to pass data into a request.

Each API definition is made up of the following elements:

Basic Settings – The name, base URL, and timeout settings used for all API requests configured in the API definition.
Actions – The capabilities provided by the Web API that will be made available to Blue Prism. The actions detail the request body and response handling for each API request in the definition.
HTTP Headers – The headers that will be used in the requests for this API definition. Common headers are used in all requests, and action-specific headers are used, in addition to any common headers, for the actions in which they are defined.
Parameters – Dynamically expanding references that are used to pass data into base URLs, URL paths, headers, and request bodies. Parameters can also be used in the Subject field for OAuth 2.0 (JWT Bearer Token) configurations. Common parameters can be used in any action, action-specific parameters can only be used in the action in which they are defined.
Common authentication – How each request to an API is authenticated.
Common code – Code used to create complex API requests and responses.

How to use Blue Prism Intelligent Automation Skills into your process

Blue Prism provides six types of built-in digital skills so you can create innovative and powerful automation by using theses. These are easily downloaded from the Digital Exchange and are accessible from the Object and Process Studio in the Skills toolbar, arranged into their respective skill categories, for easy drag and drop.

Once a Skill is visible in the Skills toolbar it becomes a reusable object that can be part of any future process.

Just to remind they are Web API business objects so even if Skills tool-box is not visible to you you can use an action to select the same.

The working of skills are similar to what we have for Web API, You can use your exception handling or other complex business decision inside the process as per your need.

Build Your First Bot Using Automagica

Prerequisite –

You need to sign up on Automagica Portal to gain access for centralized control and management for Robots.
You need to have admirative right on Machine you wish to install

For Windows-

If you work on windows-based system you can Download Automagica and start pretty quickly, it’s don’t require any additional tool and Installation is straight forward.

Install through pip-

Installation can be also done through the python package manager, All you need to do is

pip install automagica -U

As per Official Documentation currently is supported for Python 3.7, It could happen that the PyPi version is slightly behind the version available through GitHub or the Automagica Portal.

For Linux –

Fedora-like Linux (e.g. Red Hat Enterprise Linux/CentOS)

Debian-like Linux (e.g. Ubuntu)

Create your first automation using the Automagica

At this point of Article I assume, that you already have a portal account for automagica and you have successfully installed Automatica Flow as per your operating system.

Now, there are three ways of creating Automation flow for Automagica –

You can use the Automagica Flow, Visual editor to create your automation, With the help of various activities available in the panel you would be able to create complex to complex examples.
You can also use Automagica Lab to create python notebook to automate your process, It’s same as Jupyter Notebook Used to write python codes in Browser.
You can use your favourite python editors such as PyCharm, VsCode, Sublime, Spyder or many more which supports Python language. All you need is Automagica Python Library which can be installed using pip.

for this article we have used Automagica flow to build the sample bot, However same can be built using the other two methods. for Simplicity we have created separate article to build bot using pythonic way ; Which can be accessed here if you looking for python example-

Problem Statement-

We are going to create a WebScarpper Bot, Which reads the outlook to get the email attachment for Input Search Term, Search it on Wikipedia and Send Scrapped Data on Pre-Configured email.

In this example to create our First Bot Using Automagica Flow, the following operations will be performed–

Read Email from Outlook Using Outlook Activities & Save Input Attachment Excel
Read Input File Using Excel Activities
Loop Over the Content of Files to get Search Terms
Open Wikipedia and Search for Given “Search term in Loop”
Web Scrape Wikipedia Page and Send Result as Email to Configured Email
If Error, Close Outlook and Browser and Work on Next “Search Term”
Finally, Close all the open application

Congratulation! You have created your first robot using the automagica flow, But it’s not done unless we deploy it on Automagica portal for running in unattended mode or scheduled run.

Automagica Portal Dashboard

As discussed above, Automagica portal is used to manage, schedule and monitor the bots you have developed. Once you login into the dashboard you will see a screen like below.

UI elements – All your recorded Ui Elements, This uses machine learning algorithms so that Ui Selectors are more reliable. You can access all the selectors here and can be used in a different process.

How to Create Bots [Runtime Workers]

This is also pretty easy; all you need to do its Give Name to your Bot … (I call it Rob…) and the from drop-down menu download the installer (You can skip this if you already have Installer.)

Once Bot gets connected it will show status as Online.

How to Create Process on Automagica Portal

Once you are done with the changes in your Automagica Flow, you can deploy the Process on the Cloud Portal, all you need to give Name to your Process and Upload the JSON File, or the Automagica Lab or Plain python as you wish.

It’s Pretty Easy and straight forward to Deploy your first Version of Process if its break you can Deploy Changed Flow to Overwrite the flow.

How to Create Jobs on Automagica Portal

Jobs are the instance of the process, It helps you to trigger the Process on the configured bot. All you need to do is select the Process Name from the dropdown and define parameters if any.

To Create New Job, you need to navigate to the Jobs page and click “Create Job”
In the New Window, you need to select the “Process Version”, Define Parameters if any and Priority.
The moment you create the Job, it will get triggered and You should be able to check the status once completed.
You can also restart the Job or See the logs and other details form the Context Menu.
You can also download the “Console Logs ” to check what went wrong while the bot was running

How to Check Job Logs

If you have noticed, While running the automation inside Automagica Flow, It creates an entry for each activity in the console and provide other information in case any issues.

However, When the bot is running from Automagica portal the logs can be downloaded from the job details page. (See screen below)

Blue prism is recently in news for its much-awaited free trial version offered on Microsoft Azure Marketplace as a “fully functional enterprise license trial version of Blue Prism”.

The global provider of robotic process automation (RPA) technologies Blue Prism free trial of its connected-RPA platform is designed to be a quick-start deployment to introduce new users to the benefits of a Digital Workforce.

This will not only help many RPA developers to do quick POC or learn Blue Prism by own…but also for medium or small organization to run training needs and do a quick comparison between various available options

As a part of this offered under Microsoft standard contract, you will get fully functional Blue Prism instance on a virtual machine free of charge for the trial period; The users need only pay for Azure cloud consumption….

Trial users will have access to resources, tutorials, and training materials that demonstrate work queues and automation possible through the Blue Prism platform. Blue Prism currently offers integration with Microsoft Azure, Bing and Excel for the Azure Marketplace trial; future trial versions will include additional features, plus integration with Microsoft Cognitive Services.

Blue Prism is offering a single VM based on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, SQL Server 2016 Express Advanced, and Blue Prism 6.5 installed and configured.

When the machine is provisioned and the user logs in a 30-day license from the previous Monday is installed, meaning users will have at least 3 weeks with the software.

How to get the free trial edition of Blue Prism on Microsoft Azure

If you are new to Microsoft Azure Marketplace you can sign up to explore Azure with a $200 credit for 30 days, 12 months of free products, and more than 25 products that are always free.

Getting free Credit of Worth $200 is Quick way to set up a new account in case you don’t wish to use your organization account details to get started with …
All you need is your verified credit card details & and few clicks …click and next to start with ….
Once done you can get preconfigured VM Image
This process will not take more than 20 mins (including provisioning of Your VM) …

Let’s Get started !!

At this point of the article, I assume that you have successfully signed up for a free subscription on Azure or you already have an account to get started…

First, you need to find the Blue Prism Azure Trial on Azure Marketplace using the search box at the top and, once ready, click Get it now to begin. You might need to fill some mandatory details before you can see below page.

So ..follow the prompt to sign in, create an account, or provide additional information. An account is needed to proceed with the Cloud Trial. Press Continue to move into the provisioning process.

Blue Prism Robotic Process Automation

At this stage, you have two options –

Create – In case you wish to provide your configuration step by step Or you need to align this resource into an existing group of resources you have to support your organisation specific need of security and network options …
Start with a pre-set configuration – If you wish to try Blue Prism as standalone you should start with pre-set configuration this will auto-fill some of the configuration you need to select and save few minutes!

Quickly customize your virtual machine

To quickly customize your virtual machine, choose one of the given pre-set configurations as per your need or choose recommended defaults that match your workload.

Ultimately in both the above options will arrive at the Create a Virtual Machine Page where you need to provide resource group details (Create New) along with the Azure specifics Username and Password needed to start the VM at the end of the process and when logging into VM.

Complete the Basics tab then Review + create to provision a virtual machine with default parameters or review each tab for full customization.

You can modify these configurations at any time. The Username and Password are critical pieces of information so you must keep them safe.

Once you are done with required information it will validate the information captured in previous steps and validate…

you will see a page like below which will give the summary of Virtual Machine you are going to create …

Start with a pre-set configuration

After validation is completed press Create at the bottom of the page. This will start deploying the VM. It will take some time to create your resources (Usually less than 10 minutes)

Meanwhile, you can save deployment details or create a template in case you wish to re-perform the same task…

So far so good…Once your deployment is completed you will see a page like below…

Verify the Blue Prism VM Image

Click on Go to resource button at the bottom to open your VM(We call it BPDEMO01) details with options to connect and other operation for your Blue Prism VM

To connect to the VM and start using Blue Prism press Connect. This will open up another pop-up window to download the RDP file.
Save your RDP file and connect to your VM using the credentials provided during VM creation step.

Once you log in for you will see Power Shell is running to configure your VM to run Blue Prism on it
This will be a single VM based on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, SQL Server 2016 Express Advanced, and Blue Prism 6.5

BluePrism Setup is ready

Once setup is completed you will see your desktop like below which contains Blue Prism Icon to start with along with Lab and certification folder which contains Lab folders(Set of Exercise to gain hands-on Knowledge ) and Certification (Quick guide and developer best practise guide)

What can you do after Blue Prism VM provisioning

Blue Prism does not provide any trial or demo version software for practice. The company has to be a licensed partner of Blue Prism to get their software for training or projects to the purpose so use it fully to gain maximum benefit out of the free window.
Blue Prism developer accreditation is not that difficult. You can easily clear it when you understand the concepts clearly. go through the guides included into folders to gain a better understanding.
Follow the lab manuals that were provided as part of the installation to learn step by step.
